Default CatastropheStrikes!

Hello everybody,

Unfortunately as of sautrday morning around 9:00AM the website has been down. This is due to a hardware failure with the hard drive. I am in the process of backing up all the data now. The two main databases that hold all of the teachers grades are of course corrupted.

The good news:
-Should be up sometime late tonight.
-Brand new hard drive/new operating system install
-All user database information has been saved.

The bad news:
-Delay during prime weekend for classes.
-Might need to roll back teacher grades database 2 months to latest backup.
-Ruined my weekend.

I'll admit, I think it's about time I let the professionals start managing my server. There are problems though because GCP goes through 3-8 gigs of traffic, and it does lots of unique things. It may be possible, but only after converting a lot of my code/databases to different formats. I will look into it for the summer because this downtime is unacceptable.

Sorry all, I will post details as they arise here.

Wow that's awful luck! Perhaps offsite hosting would be best. I was referred by a fellow CalPolyOnline person to http://www.ifahosting.com/ where it's a dollar a month. Perhaps you can look into that and see if they offer what you need, maybe one of their slightly more expensive plans can offer the bandwidth.

I currently host a single low-traffic website on there and haven't experienced any problems. But I haven't done anything with it in a while, so I can't really say with a lot of certainty that's they're good.

Holy cow! Thats cheap!!! Lots of traffic, really nice deal... too bad they don't offer ASP support. In order to host on one of those sites I will still need a dedicated server up doing all the important background stuff, and i'll need to spend maybe 20-30 hours to get the web server and home server talking. That's the only thing holding me back. I only got 12 units this summer so I could do it this summer...

Anyhow! Gradecalpoly.com is up and more reliable then before! New hard drive, removed some faulty RAM... all the background scripts should be up and working in a couple more hours.

Aah. Ruined my day Right before finals week too... Hope everyone had a good day

The hard drive has been replaced with a standard Western Digital 80 gigabyte drive. It all shouldn't matter soon, because it looks viable to have off-site hosting... hopefully by the end of summer. 99.9% guaranteed uptime, versus... the current ~97%.

Fortunately, the early registration period ended and late registration starts later on.
Good choice on the hard drive brand. My Western Digital harddrive is still going very strong while the newer Maxtor harddrive makes worrisome sound during heavy use.

And about the webhosts, I would be hesitant to go with ifahosting. You get what you pay for. But if money is an issue to you, why not.
Easycgi received some great review but minor complaints about high price. I recommend checking out webhostingtalk.com PandamoOo.

Seagates are generally pretty good from the statisitics i've seen. All fairness being said, it's pretty hard to judge how good a hard drive maker is by a few case examples or word of mouth... i mean hard drives can easily be user damaged and their failure is so irregular.

As far as hosting goes, I'll probably stick with "godaddy.com" they're my registrar, they're not too bad on cost/features/bandwidth, and they provide excellent 24/7 tech support and i've been with them for years so customer loyalty is one of the issues. Thanks for all the input!
