Need career advice? Looking to grow your network? The Career Center offers two events this month to link alumni with employers from different industries and to help improve networking and job search skills. Also, don't miss the annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration, which has become a multicultural event for the campus community and area residents. This issue of Poly @lumni spotlights Ronald A. Banaszak, '95, Hospitality Management, who has had a successful career in the private club industry.

Students and Alumni Connect with Employers at Career Cafe
November 5 - Students and alumni are encouraged to drop by for coffee and networking, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Career Center. Professionals from BCBG Max Azria, Disney College Program, Enterprise, Fluor, Panda Restaurant Group, RBF, Riverside County & Wells Fargo Financial will meet one-on-one to critique resumes, address job search concerns and answer career questions. 2nd Annual NYC Alumni Mixer
November 9 - Enjoy the company of fellow Cal Poly Pomona alumni while overlooking the heart of Times Square during the Second Annual NYC Alumni Mixer. The event will be Monday, Nov. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the New York Marriott Marquis' Promenade (9th floor), located at 1535 Broadway. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be provided. Dia de los Muertos Celebration
November 12 - Join in the annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. Procession begins at 5 p.m. at the University Quad. There will be special performances by La Santa Cecilia and face painting in front of the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education from 3 to 5 p.m. The celebration also includes multicultural alters, performances and food sales. The event is sponsored by the Chavez Center, Multicultural Council, La Union, Ethnic & Women's Studies department, ASI B.E.A.T., ASI, Office of Student Life & Cultural Centers and Xicano/Latino Heritage Month. Charles Lindsley Memorial Vocal Scholarship Fundraiser
November 12 -"Anything Goes" features faculty, alumni and students performing solos, duets, ensembles, classical, pop and Broadway tunes. The performance is directed by Susan Burns with Janet Noll on piano. Showtime is at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall, and tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students. Theatre Department Presents 'Grapes of Wrath'
November 13-22 - The theatre department will present John Steinbeck's classic "The Grapes of Wrath" on Nov 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 and 22 at the University Theatre. The play is about a family's pursuit of a better life during the Depression. The Nov. 13-21 showings start at 8 p.m. and the Nov. 22 performance begins at 2 p.m. A special group matinee will be presented on Nov. 18 at 10 a.m., and reservations are required. Tickets cost $15 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors and Cal Poly Pomona employees. Purchase tickets online at www.class.csupomona.edu/th/shows/ or at the theatre box office. Boeing Hosts Employer Perspective Workshop: "Network Yourself"

Mike Viola Holds Concert and Master Class
November 19 - Songwriter Mike Viola returns to Cal Poly Pomona for a benefit concert and songwriting master class. Proceeds will fund scholarships for students in the music industry studies program. Tickets cost $15 for general admission and $10 for students. The master class is free. Read more...

Harvest Celebration 2009
November 21 - The Collins College of Hospitality Management is putting a new spin on an old tradition. On Saturday, November 21, the college will host Harvest Celebration 2009 at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa. The fundraising celebration is reminiscent of the Harvest Auction but will take on a new format. The college will continue to award the Robert Mondavi Wine & Food Award in addition to presenting the new Hospitality Leader of the Year Award and the college's 2010 distinguished alumnus. Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will receive the Hospitality Leader of the Year Award; Steve Slater, vice president & general manager of Southern Wine & Spirits of Southern California will be honored with the Robert Mondavi Award; and Margaret Bailey, senior vice president of Government Services for Capital Hotel Management, will receive the college's Distinguished Alumni Award. Ronald A. Banaszak, Jr.
'95, Hospitality Management

Ronald Banaszak makes hospitality a science. His disciplined approached has earned him the position of general manager and chief operating officer of the prestigious St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.

He has twice been designated a Certified Club Manager from the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) and has been elevated to the status of Honor Society. He has been nominated for 2010 for the Board of Directors of the CMAA.

Banaszak entered the private club industry as a hospitality management student, accepting a post in the food and beverage department of a San Gabriel Valley private country club. He immediately fell in love with the field. Read more...

Stuart J. Sperber$1 Million Endowment to Benefit Lyle Center
The Stuart J. Sperber Endowed Chair/Faculty Fellowship for Sustainable Systems has been established in memory of the College of Agriculture alumnus. The endowment will support the John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies and research on environmental sustainability. Read more...

Improving the Health of Latinos
Cal Poly Pomona has received a three-year, $248,043 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to train dietetic students to better serve the Latino community. The funding will expand the curriculum for Human Nutrition & Food Science students, offering new courses that develop Spanish-language skills and focus on Latino culture as well as food and health issues. University Welcomes Veteran Students
Cal Poly Pomona welcomed new and returning veteran students to campus with a reception and networking mixer on Oct. 12. As part of an ongoing effort to support veterans and their education, the event allowed students to learn about services the university provides and connect with Student Veterans Organization, a group that launched in the spring. Art of Digital Photography Offered by the College of the Extended University
Create powerful, emotional and technically solid still imagery using a digital SLR camera and computer. Taught by an Official White House photographer whose work has been exhibited at the U.S. capital and at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The course runs from January 5 through March 9.
